ELLSWORTH — Close to 100 people registered for Team Hope Walk for Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA) on Oct. 13 at Ellsworth High School. Six teams and many individuals hit the three-mile trail under sunny skies and in high spirits as they celebrated hope for a cure and gratitude for the support of each other and the community.
The event brought in a record $22,000 for education, support, research and advocacy with further donations accepted until Dec. 31.
Regarding advocacy, the Maine affiliate of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America was honored with the National Advocacy Award at the National HDSA Convention in June. Sen. Angus King and Reps. Jared Golden and Chellie Pingree have co-sponsored the Parity Act, which will improve access to Medicare for Huntington’s patients.
“Team Hope connects families to the services of HDSA,” said Team Hope Organizer Nancy Patterson. “A new support group will start up in Bangor this January and an Education Day will happen in the spring. We continue to be fortunate to have so much community support and family participation.
“Team Hope puts us all together on a forward path.”
